Welcome to the end of another week, and something a little different for FIVE FOR FRIDAY! This week I’m spotlighting five current crowdfunding campaigns worth checking out. Being a Science Fiction & Fantasy writer and editor myself, that’s what I’m going to be looking at here. Check it out!

SHAPERS OF WORLDS: VOLUME IV (Shadowpaw Press)
Growing out of his Aurora Award-winning podcast The Worldshapers, author and editor Edward Willett launched the SHAPERS OF WORLDS anthology series in 2020. The anthology series features stories from past podcast guests. The campaign is already fully funded, but stretch goals include additional illustrations throughout the book.

SWORDS IN THE SHADOWS (Outer Shadows)
An anthology of Sword & Sorcery tales edited by Cullen Bunn? That alone should be enough to inspire the cry of “Shut up and take my money!” But these are Sword & Sorcery stories with a Horror bent to them, making this a truly irresistible offering. Best of all, there’s also a Cullen Bunn novella available as a pledge incentive. This one has five days to make it across the line, so smash that pledge button!

FIGHTING FOR THE FUTURE (Android Press)
Part SF anthology, part RPG, FIGHTING FOR THE FUTURE is an exploration of Cyberpunk and Solarpunk with an impressive roster including Ai Jang, Holly Schofield, and Cory Doctorow, to name just a few contributors. The stories sound great and the RPG rules seem fun, easy, and innovative. This campaign is already past the halfway mark with just under a month to go, so check it out and spread the word.

INNER WORKINGS: A CALENDAR OF FOOLS ANTHOLOGY (Calendar of Fools)
The Calendar of Fools is new small press launched by a group of writers who met at the 2021 Writers of the Future Workshop. The anthology they’re launching collects short stories and craft essays from members. Being WoF winners, these are folks who know a thing or two about how to write a great story. Whether you’re a reader or an aspiring writer (heck, I firmly believe even the most established of writers can always learn something new about storytelling) there’s sure to be something in here for you.

MRS. COVINGTON’S: A COZY FANTASY NOVEL (K.R.R. Lockhaven)
In the words of… uh, some guy, “You had me at capybara-themed pub.” Look, I’ll admit I don’t know much about this and before stumbling across this Kickstarter, K.R.R. Lockhaven was not a name I had heard. But this sounds so fun and endearing I really have no choice but to give it a shout out here and toss a few bucks at it. Cozy Fantasy is a seriously overlooked genre, and a welcome escape from the grimdark everyday we deal with every day.

Chris Patrick Carolan is an author, editor, and hovercraft enthusiast, originally from Glasgow but now based in Calgary, Alberta. He writes science fiction, fantasy (urban and epic), and steampunk, though he has also been known to turn to crime to make ends meet. Crime fiction, that is. His first novel, THE NIGHTSHADE CABAL, was published by Parliament House Press in 2020, and was a finalist for the Crime Writers of Canada Awards of Excellence ‘Best First Novel’ award. He can be found on Twitter as @cpcwrites but–consider this fair warning–it’s mostly wisecracks about McNuggets.
